Sri Lanka want Lasith Malinga to return back from IPL

Sri Lanka have told Lasith Malinga to return home from the Indian Premier League after the bowler made himself unavailable for the tour of England.

Malinga ruled himself out of the three Tests due to a knee complaint, despite still playing for the Mumbai Indians.

Chairman of selectors Duleep Mendis said the new committee has written a letter to Malinga asking him to begin a new rehabilitation plan in Colombo.

"It looks a bit awkward when [he] says he's injured and still plays," he said.

"That is the reason why we have decided to write to Malinga and ask him to return home and undergo a rehabilitation programme.

"Malinga has specifically mentioned in a letter that he is not available for Test matches right now because he has a nagging knee problem.

Personally, I am not unhappy to return early. Playing for my country is more important than playing for IPL. I think everybody selected for the England tour will be happy to come early

Tillakaratne Dilshan Sri Lanka captain

"When the player says that he is injured and he has to undergo a rehab programme what we can do is to tell him to undergo it immediately, without continuing to play cricket in the IPL, and then get ready for cricket in Sri Lanka if he is interested in playing for his country."

Sri Lanka - who will be captained by Tillakaratne Dilshan for the first time - are short on seam options for the England tour after Angelo Mathews was ruled out with a quad injury suffered during the 2011 World Cup.

Malinga, who has become a limited-overs specialist in recent years, has played onlytwo Tests - which came against India in 2010 - since England's tour of Sri Lanka in December 2007.

The 27-year-old is known as "The Slinger", for his low-armed delivery.

"We are very much concerned about Malinga because he is an important product in the team," stated Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Nishantha Ranatunga.

"He should be up and running to play in all three formats of the game. In that sense getting him fit and ready to play at full strength is very important."

Tillakaratne Dilshan's squad play Tests in Cardiff (from 26 May), at Lord's (3 June) and The Rose Bowl (16 June).

Dilshan was named as captain on Tuesday, succeeding Kumar Sangakkara who stepped down after the World Cup.

The 16-member squad has four fast bowlers in Dilhara Fernando, Chanaka Welegedara, Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep.

Nuwan Kulasekara - the fast bowler who played in Sri Lanka's previous Test series, against West Indies, and featured on the 2006 tour of England - has been dropped.

Lahiru Thirimanne and Dinesh Chandimal have also received call-ups. Both are considered to be among the most promising young Sri Lankan batsmen, and have already played ODIs.

Those players currently featuring in the IPL will return home early to prepare for the tour.

Dilshan said: "Personally, I am not unhappy to return early. Playing for my country is more important than playing for IPL. I think everybody selected for the England tour will be happy to come early."
